Job Description: The Horticultural Specialist is responsible for all aspects of plant care and will work closely with the Director of Horticulture to maintain healthy plants and a rewarding exhibit for our visitors. Daily activities include watering, pest/disease scouting and pruning. Plant care takes many forms and you will be expected to help in any project that is ongoing in addition to your daily responsibilities. You will be required to maintain proper quarantine rules and regulations and must be meticulous with record keeping. Starting salary is $10/hr during training and will go up, based on experience and upon successful completion of probationary period.

Job Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in biology, plant science, agronomy or related field (or working toward it). A desire for hands-on plant work. Knowledge of plant care (how to water, fertilize, prune, etc). Knowledge of common plant pests a huge plus. Strong record keeping skills are necessary. Should work well with others but also be independent in your decision-making. Must be able to work in the heat of the greenhouse and be able to perform strenuous tasks like shoveling, lifting boxes and transplanting.

Looking for 20-30 hours a week.

The Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion is a startup museum in Northeast Philly aiming to provide engaging insect, reptile, amphibian and plant exhibits to inspire our guests to want to learn. In our Insectarium we have two floors of tanks of exotic and native bugs and small vertebrates. We even have our own beehive! The Butterfly Pavilion is a recently added 7,000 square foot greenhouse with a myriad of tropical and subtropical plants and butterflies.
